"Determining What Works One Day at a Time"
By John R. Bergan, President, ATI
Summary: Click to show/hide
There is widespread agreement that in order to continue to be competitive in the global society in which we live, we must elevate student achievement significantly beyond current levels. In order to realize the needed achievement gains, we need to rethink the kinds of information required to guide policy decisions. If schools are to change achievement by the end of the school year, they will need to change instruction during the school year. Learning occurs on a daily basis during the year. Thus, it is reasonable to argue that the goal of increasing learning can be effectively supported by initiatives addressing instruction and learning one day at a time. This presentation examines the role of research in determining what works to promote student learning one day at a time. The presentation discusses the benefits of short experimental studies in informing daily instruction. It provides examples of successful practice providing information to guide brief instructional interventions, and it addresses the ways in which technological innovations may contribute to systematic research initiatives aimed at promoting student learning. The presentation concludes with a discussion of educational management systems designed to provide rapid and continuous improvements in instruction by shortening the time required to produce data that can effectively inform instruction.
